Mukai is a Japanese word that means Abstract, Intangible, Immaterial, Spiritual, Moral.
In my latest pieces, I have embraced this term by creating contemporary works that combine abstract metallic acrylic backgrounds on heavy paper or canvas with thickened, hand-ground Sumi-Ink Kanji Calligraphy. Each piece is the culmination of an extended meditation on the meaning of the Kanji calligraphy, given in each title, and the swift kanji strokes are then observed.
In the Urban Dictionary, Mukai is a synonym for utmost "epicness." It can be used to replace any word/action/names at any given time. I think these pieces are pretty Mukai!!
